With Christmas over and New Year just around the corner, it is that time of year when we make resolutions. Or rather, promises to a new kind of life, a better life. It is that time of year when we get in touch with our inner selves and evaluate our lives, the good, the bad, the painful, the happy.
It is also that time of year when we are filled with hope and perhaps courage. The courage to do things we have dreamed about at some point in our lives.
We all have dreams, some big, others not so big. We all want what is best for us. But sometimes, most of the time actually, life doesn’t treat us that well. It plays its conniving tricks on us. Just when we think that we have done everything in our power, like taking care of others and putting others’ needs ahead of ours, working to earn a living and taking care of our families and loved ones just so we can dedicate our time or whatever is left of it to our dreams, life throws yet another hurdle in our way.
Shocked, saddened and confused we hide once more in our shells and let the days go by. Left to our destiny we let the dream die. We don’t have the courage anymore, but:
“The only courage you really need is the courage to begin.” Julia Cameron
And when it doesn’t work we become frustrated, angry, and on most days we don’t know how to behave. Instead of encouraging we pester and badger our creative selves. We ask, “What’s the point?” or say, “I’ll never make it so why bother?” hence burying our dream yet again perhaps for good this time.
Julia Cameron writes:
“There is always some small creative act for which we can find the courage.”
But then at the back of our mind we think we have to give it one more shot. We have to try again. We have to have courage enough to at least try one more time, just this once. If we can only find the courage and time to begin.
“What “real artists” have is courage. Not enormous gobs of it. Just enough for today.” Julia Cameron
I hope you have courage not just for today but for every day of the coming year, year 2015.
Happy creative new year!
